Finally the decision is made. Jon Lester has reportedly agreed to a $155 million deal over 6 years to head the Chicago Cubs rotation. He is going to receive an average of $25 million/year. The 106-year WS drought could be over within the next couple years as this Winter Meetings deal will be talked about for years and years to come.
Lester will be the #1 starter to a rotation under him that consists of Jake Arietta, Jason Hammel, Travis Wood, Kyle Hendricks, Jacob Turner, and Edwin Jackson. The rotation before the Lester signing had a lot of potential, but now after the signing it looks sexy. The Cubs have arguably one of the best prospect classes of the last 30 years. Now most of the prospects are 22 years old with some 2014 major league experience, which means they are ready to pounce especially now with a great veteran in the clubhouse to lead them.
Jon is coming from the American league where he played mostly in the eastern division, which is has always been a great hitting division. Considering that he faced some of the best hitters in the game, his numbers are truly remarkable. During 9 years in a Boston uniform he was 110-63 with a 3.64 ERA, 1.287 WHIP, 8.2 K/9, and 10 CG. These stats may not be out of this world, but considering that he pitched in a hitter’s park and against the eastern division, they are well worth at least $20 million a year. Now factor in his playoff performance, which is 6-4 with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.071 WHIP, his value can rise to $23 million/year. By the way the American league is better offensively and so is the AL East compared to the NL Central. Now move the man with 2 rings and a no hitter to the top of the Cubs rotation in the NL Central. The value can go up to $25 million/year. The question is though; can Jon Lester live up to his contract and lead the Cubbies deep into the playoffs?
