Wilson Ramos Signing Makes Rays a 2017 Wild Card Contender

The Tampa Bay Rays are a small market team looking to trade their ace pitcher. Clearly they aren’t expecting to be any better than .500 in 2017. However, signing all-star catcher Wilson Ramos sends an interesting signal. The Rays lack a starting catcher, so they went out and signed one. That’s how the Rays see it, but it may be more beneficial to their 2017 campaign then they think. Because Wieters is not Returning Castillo is a Good Sign

Injury concerns and the looming of a big contract are amongst the reasons Matt Wieters is unlikely to re-sign with the O’s. Caleb Joseph is only as good as his current role; a backup. So, the Orioles had to go out and get a starter. Welington Castillo is the new catcher in Baltimore coming from Arizona on a 1-year $6 million deal with a player option for 2018. He too has dealt with some injuries, but is decently productive when healthy. Considering his productivity, $6 million is a bargain. Nate-White Sox Blockbuster Deal Most Lob Sided Deal to Date

Honestly, Adam Eaton is one of the most underrated players in the game. He had a 2016 WAR of 6.2. But, is he worth giving up Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, and Dane Dunning? No, despite his playing ability and being under contract for the next 3-5 years. Adam Eaton has turned himself into one of the most productive outfielders in the game since his arrival to Chicago. Eaton’s three seasons with the White Sox has resulted in a combined 15.4 WAR. He has lead the league in triples twice, collected 175+ hits twice, and accumulated an OPS+ of 120+ each Continue reading Nate-White Sox Blockbuster Deal Most Lob Sided Deal to Date

The Interesting Case of the Ian Desmond Signing

Colorado shocked the baseball world this morning by inking Ian Desmond to a 5-year $70 million contract. But, Desmond has only played outfield and shortstop. That is why this is an interesting case. Certainly Desmond will make the Rockies lineup that much more lethal, possibly the best in the game. However, what position will he play? There is no DH in the NL, and the only open spot in the Rockies’ defense right now is 1st base; a position Desmond has never played. Other than that, the Rockies are a small market team. Why spend $70 million on an experiment? Continue reading The Interesting Case of the Ian Desmond Signing
