The rumors are true; the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates is a true baseball venue that spells out America’s Past Time. Despite only being 14-years-old, PNC Park has an old look to it with a splash of modern style. With the rivers all around and bridges crossing over it to reach the stadium, buildings surrounding the area, PNC Park is something out of a baseball storybook.
The grand stadium doesn’t have a true great main entrance, but does have that old grey-stone look to the outside. There are of course banners hanging representing the greats who have played there before, along with the three great statues. All three replicas of Willie Stargell, Honus Wagner, and Roberto Clemente are all on the 3rd base side of PNC, which is different compared to other venues that have them spread out. With the Honus Wagner statue out in front of the main entrance, the stadium gives out a sign that there is some great rich history with the buckos. From the first look at the young venue, one would think it is an older stadium.
Once inside, one can obviously see the modern look, with multiple concession stands with a variety of choices. The concourse wraps around the whole field, while the outfield overlooks the water. Big home runs to right field will splash land into the water where there are people waiting in boats. The only odd part about the stadium is the few black elevated walkways that get fans to higher levels. However, they are very interesting and give the stadium it’s own unique style. Black and yellow is all around, as the Pittsburgh fan base is one of the best in baseball, very enthusiastic, and one will see many fans crowded on the walkways crouching over the railing to watch the game.
PNC Park is in the A-class of all sports venues. The old-new look is a great compromise to baseball, as the sports world is now building new billion dollar state of the art venues. One can feel the history and pride of the Pirates when visiting PNC Park, and at the same time, receive the luxury of modern style stadiums.
