Hooker Field, an Interesting Summer Ball Stadium

The first thing that is noticeable at the home of the Martinsville Mustangs of the Coastal Plain League (Summer ball short-season) is that the infield is astroturf, while the outfield is natural grass; a rare, yet interesting combination. Walking into the main entrance, the fans walk down steps into the seating area, just the way baseball stadiums should be designed. However, overall the layout is a little too complex.

The complexity of the layout does make Hooker Field unique, however. There is a picnic area down the left field line which gives a great space for families with small children, but it does jut out into foul ball territory enough that it may have an impact on the game. The main seating area behind home plate with all blue seats is fantastic, as well as the general admission bleachers sitting the behind bullpen down the right field line. Aside from the stands, the concourse is nothing special wrapping around from 3rd base to 1st base. But, the press box behind the grandstand is a bit big for the narrow concourse, making the whole stadium feel a little cramped. Despite Hooker Field trying to cramp to many things into and around a basic concourse, and having an unorthodox field, it is a nice facility to see a summer ball game. Score: C+.
