Cubs Trade for Montero

Reportedly the Cubs and D-Backs have agreed to a trade that will send Miguel Montero to the Cubs in exchange for 2 minor league pitchers. Those two pitchers are Jefferson Mejia and Zack Godley.

This deal is absolutely huge for the Cubs after losing out on Russell Martin. Wellington Castillo is a good catcher with power in his bat and arm as well as his pitch framing, but he is not quite good enough for 130+ games in the starting role. In order for the young pitching staff of the Cubs to get better they needed a strong presence behind the plate and that is what Miguel Montero brings. He is a 2-time all-star with a career caught steeling percentage of %31. He swings a good bat and has good presence in the locker room. The plan (reportedly) is for he and Castillo to share the catching gear for 2015. This plan could work magnificently as it has a lot of potential with the possibility of Montero being a mentor for Castillo and the pitching staff. The negative about Montero though is that his caught steeling percentage is dropping bit by bit the last 4 seasons and his contract has $40 million left on it, but his range factor has grown from 7.98 to just over 8 in 2014, which was above league average. The $40 million might be a lot, but it is over 3 years, which is a lot of time for him to share his wisdom in the clubhouse. The Cubs also are pretty well of in terms of money as their highest paid player (Castro) makes $13 million a year, while the others are not making more than 8. Their payroll is around $92 million. Can the Cubs perform well on this trade?

The D-Backs most certainly can’t as they are looking to rebuild and build around their new hope to be star in Yasmany Thomas. What this does is open up some room in bank. It also gives them two more prospects that can hopefully help out that poor pitching staff that is on the mound at Chase Field. But how much will it help if their veteran catcher is no longer behind the plate? For a rebuilding and money strategy this was an OK trade for the Diamondbacks, but it does sting a bit for the fans, as Montero was a well-liked player in Arizona and surely it will leave people clueless as Montero might have been worth more than what they got.
